Discharge Rate Setting, Activation and Installation

Installing a Unit for the First Time

Clean round the area of the grease nipple. Using a grease gun filled with the same lubricant as in the Auto Grease, purge the lubrication channels to the bearing to ensure that they are full of lubricant and are free-flowing. Remove the grease nipple from its socket and fill the socket with the lubricant. If an adaptor, an extension tube or a non-return valve is being fitted, fill this with lubricant too.

The Discharge Duration

The numbers on the dial indicate the durations in months that can be expected at a mean ambient temperature of +20°C. A higher temperature will shorten the discharge duration. A lower temperature will lengthen it. The discharge duration may also be lengthened (and the daily lubricant input reduced) by excessive resistance in the bearing channels, by the use of long extension tubes, or by the use of non-standard fittings with restricted offices. Compensate for any anticipated variation by selecting a shorter or longer dial setting. Always set the discharge duration by clockwise rotation of the control knob. If the desired setting is overrun, rotate the dial anti-clockwise and reset. (This counteracts any backlash in the mechanism).

Guidance on the typical discharge rates and average lifetimes with changes in ambient temperatures are given below:

Replacing a Spent Auto Grease

Simply clean round the base of the spent Auto Grease, unscrew it and replace it with a new Auto Grease that has been set and activated in the manner described above. There will normally be no need to replace or refill any extension tubing or other fittings.

Special Instructions for Oil Fillings

The installation of Auto Greases filled with oil is not quite as straight forward as in the case of the those filled with grease, because fluids will run out of a GREASEOMATIC during handling and installation unless simple precautionary measures are taken.

Cautionary Notes

Should it be important for lubrication to commence without any delay, the Auto Grease should be activated in advance and put on one side until lubricant begins to extrude before it is installed. This applies particularly to Auto Greases set with longer discharge durations.

Avoid unscrewing a working Auto Grease from its socket before the Auto Grease is spent or pressure will be lost and the working life will be reduced even if the Auto Grease is replaced immediately.

Unused Auto Greases that are stored in dry conditions at a moderate temperatures, will remain in working order for at least 2 years from the date of manufacture (indicated in the batch number printed on the unit's label). However it is a commonsense measure to rotate stocks.

Auto Greases are made to high standards of accuracy and consistency and the information in this and other Auto Grease publications is given in good faith. However, the conditions which Auto Greases are used and the lubricant needs of different bearings can vary so widely, that no responsibility bearings can vary so widely, that no responsibility can be accepted for any loss or damage to machinery or equipment as a result of inadequate lubrication provided by an Auto Grease. Where continuous lubrication of a bearing is critical requirement, it is essential for the user to inspect and ensure that lubrication is adequate. This is made easy by the discharge level indicator that shows through the translucent windows in the body of an Auto Grease.

Working Pressures

Under normal conditions an Auto Grease operates at a low pressure of less than 1 bar, The exact pressure is determined by the resistance to flow of the lubrication channels and the bearing. (The main reason a grease gun is designed to exert very high pressure is to overcome the high resistance of the grease nipple itself - with the nipple removed, the lubricant should flow freely). If old lubricant has stiffened in a neglected bearing, the Auto Grease's pressure will build up until the obstruction is cleared and lubrication can begin.

The Pressure Relief Valve

In the event of a complete blockage of the lubrication channels, the Auto Grease's internal pressure will build up to about 6 bars at which level the pressure relief valve will operate as a safety measure and release lubricant from the base. This prevents overpressurisation and serves as a warning that no lubrication is taking place.

Use at Extreme Temperatures

An Auto Grease can be installed at any ambient temperature between -20¡C and +60¡C. If an Auto Grease is required to lubricate a bearing operating at a temperature outside this range, or if it is desired to adjust the discharge rate and lubricant dosage for a bearing operating within that temperature range, the Auto Grease should be installed elsewhere in a more moderate temperature and should be connected to the bearing by extension tubing. The lubricant selected must always be suitable for use at the temperature of the relevant bearing of course. If an Auto Grease is required to work in widely fluctuating temperatures, this will present no problem but the lubricant input rate will fluctuate accordingly.
